You mean I can be both?
A lot of AuDHD individuals report a feeling of having ‘two brains’, of not knowing what internal voice to listen to, of being at war with oneself. Do I pursue structure or novelty? Order or chaos? Interest or security? These factors and values can feel at odds; I will argue they are necessarily linked.
The boundary line between ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) can be blurry and can sometimes end up looking like a similar set of symptoms and behaviors. Overstimulation? Difficulty with Executive Function? Extreme difficulty with self regulation? The feeling that you’re playing with a rulebook that was in no way written for you? Individuals all along the AuDHD spectrum report these experiences. The difference is not in the experience, it’s in how you get there.
Are you overstimulated because you pushed yourself emotionally beyond your limits and now you feel kinda weird and tired behind the eyes but you don’t really know what that is? Or are you overstimulated because your brain prefers a bottom up model of processing and working against that saps your energy immensely? Or, both?!?
There are rules that govern how you operate, and you CAN learn those rules, and you CAN align your life with what you want that to look like.
It’s not too much to want to feel at peace and in charge of your own brain and body! Often the barriers between you and aligning yourself are much more socialized and learned than they are a genetic destiny. You are absolutely capable of creating a life that you would want, even if you don’t even know how to begin thinking about what that would look like.
Through reflection, targeted goals, and judgement free observation, coaching can be an essential tool in building your own essential tools, regardless of your particular flavor of comorbid neurodiversity.
